Fort Worth - Mayor's Week of Compassionate Service - Jan 21 - 29

I missed this approaching - too distracted by preparations for the Women's March, I guess.

This is the second annual event held in Fort Worth, and very Fort Worth-while. Sorry. Really awful pun that just came to me. Now it's leaving.

If you go to the official website, you can register your availability for the week, and hopefully get plugged into something of real service to others.

There's also a list of scheduled events under "Who is Participating? / Volunteer." They have a number of events planned, and most of what I saw are yet to come in the week.  Only a couple have already passed.

If you're looking for a spark of an idea for individual service, or gathering your own group for something special, here's a list of some of the things that volunteers did last year:

In 2016, we held our initial Mayor’s Week of Compassionate Service, encouraging families, businesses, organizations and friends across Tarrant County to come together and create a project or simply promote an existing project during this unique week.

78 organizations participated, and here are a few of the service projects we promoted:

  • Cleaning debris from vacant lots
  • “Make a wish” art party
  • Tutoring services
  • Chaperoning students for a local school
  • Donation drive for babies
  • Nursing home visitation
  • Purpose workshops
  • Litter pick up
  • Feeding the homeless through a local organization
  • Clothing drive
  • Delivering for meals-on-wheels
  •  Giving blood
  • Book drive for local organizations
  • Mentoring teens through local organizations
  • Creating cards for children in local hospitals
  • Building a house
  • No cost haircuts for seniors.
  • Park clean up
  • Tax preparation for low wage earners
